Asami Asama, who creates with the embroidery methodology, describes herself as a “bowl”. According to Asama, it is important to create her work faithfully with inspiration. She calls herself a shamanic style, which is why her works keep the purity. 

Your work is based is focused on embroidery, is this something that you’ve learned from the beginning?
-No, I started with a drawing first, all by myself. Originally, I worked as an illustrator, but then I wanted to create work with my original expression which was the reason I shifted to art instead of doing client work. 
I moved to embroidery because of my child’s illness. During that time, I did not create anything even though I did wanted to. However, it is difficult to find time and place for painting. Embroidery was the only thing that came to my mind which can balance between my life as an artist and my private life.

So the embroidery was the artistic expression that could be easily adapted in your life. Is embroidery also self-taught as well?
-Yes, it was a self-taught as well, that’s why I can’t teach to others even though I get asked to do workshops. I have my own rules and methods, but they are not particularly structured. Way of creating my work is something that I’ve come across throughout my lifestyle, so it may be different from the people who learned embroidery properly. Besides, the expression is important for me so I don’t want to be craft or handcraft.

As long as it is “artwork using the method of embroidery”, the viewpoint as an artist is a must. What do you think about that?
-My work is rather an inspiration type. It may be strange to say it’s shamanic, but it just feels like the idea just ‘comes down’ in me. The motif comes down in my head and it’s all about how I can output that motif as a work. That’s my style of creation.

In other words, you feel like artists stand between inspiration and their work.
-That’s just my case, but that’s why my mental condition is so important. I think the work is connected to invisible things like the mental condition of the artist. So I never create my work when my condition is unstable as I feel like it will always reflect my work. In the morning, I tend to do a ‘purification ceremony’ and I believe it’s important to gain pure inspiration and how pure the work can be. 
In the past, I had a complex of being told that I’m rather more like a Shaman rather than an artist, but now I don’t care and I even feel like an identity now as I can make a much better work than when I think in my head.
The flow of my work is “Think” → “Sketch” → “Embroidery on canvas”. I usually get new inspirations and ideas at midnight/dawn, and once I do, I sketch them right away so I won’t forget.

Last but not least, do you have anything that you want to change in the?   
-No, not really because my work has a prototype and it’s a matter of how I can catch them and transfer on to my work. That’s why I have always been careful about my mind and body. If you feel sick physically or mentally, then I don’ t think I can’t make good works. It is very important to be a good ‘bowl’.
